The Mitsubishi Pajero is officially making a comeback. Mitsubishi Motors President and COO Keisuke Kishiura confirmed that a new cross-country SUV will be released by the end of 2026. Global debuts and pre-orders are anticipated to start around August or September 2026, with initial customer deliveries planned for December 2026.
Key Details of the Revival
- Platform Architecture: The fifth-generation flagship SUV shifts back to a rugged body-on-frame (ladder-frame) chassis. It will share its foundational bones with the latest Mitsubishi Triton pickup platform.
- Manufacturing: Production is moving out of Japan. The SUV will be built in Thailand alongside the Triton and then reverse-imported back into Japan and other global markets.
- Powertrain Options: The main driver for most regions will be a 2.4-liter twin-turbo diesel engine (4N16) pushing roughly 201 horsepower and 470 Nm of torque. A high-efficiency Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) variant is also heavily planned to meet strict modern emissions rules.
- Drivetrain & Capability: It will retain its pure off-road DNA using an updated version of Mitsubishi's legendary Super Select 4WD system alongside advanced terrain management driving modes.
- Exterior & Interior Design: Teaser details reveal a single long-wheelbase setup with a bold, highly boxy silhouette, vertical LED tail lights, and an upright front "Dynamic Shield" grille. The interior is stepping drastically upmarket with a fully digital instrument cluster, massive center touchscreen, and potential three-row seating
- Global Availability & Naming: Depending on the region, the vehicle will carry different names based on classic heritage. It is widely expected to debut as the Montero in North America and South America, and potentially as the Shogun or Pajero across the UK, Europe, Australia, and Asia. Trademark filings in the United States have already renewed the Montero nameplate as Mitsubishi evaluates demand for a stateside return to battle the Toyota Land Cruiser
